The Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers and businesses about a new phishing attack that resembles an email confirmation claiming the recipient has filed a complaint with the BBB. The malicious emails first came to the attention of the BBB on Thursday, October 15.

The Competition Bureau announced today that it has secured commitments from seven Canadian hot tub and spa retailers making representations that their Dynasty Spas products are associated with the ENERGY STAR program. The Bureau concludes that these representations violated the Competition Act, in that they were materially false or misleading and influenced consumers in their decision to purchase the products.

Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers and businesses about a phishing scheme that uses both e-mail messages and blog posts directing recipients and viewers to register software with BBB. BBB wants the public to know that such messages and posts are not coming from any element of the BBB System, and that this attack has not affected BBB computer systems or networks nor has any data been comprised.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning taxpayers to beware of a recent scam where some Canadians are receiving a letter fraudulently identified as coming from the CRA and asking for personal information. The letter is not from the CRA.

Though the “Emergency Scam” (sometimes referred to as the “Grandparent Scam”) has been around for years, the RCMP led Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre (PhoneBusters) warns the public to be on the look out after noting a marked increase in the number of complaints in the last two months.

The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Section would like to remind the public to be on the look out for the "Black Money Scam".
The Organized Fraud Section has recently investigated three cases of this scam in the Ottawa region and strongly suspects that there are other persons who have yet to report to police or are currently still being targeted.

The Ottawa Police Service has received several complaints regarding a “hitman” scam, where recipients are advised that the sender has been hired to kill them. If the recipient pays the requested fee, the sender will not carry out the hit.

The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Section has investigated numerous complaints involving a local snow removal company. Allegations against the company were in relation to poor service, no service, and fraudulent business practices.

The FBI has recently developed information indicating cyber criminals are attempting to once again send fraudulent e-mails to unsuspecting recipients stating that someone has filed a complaint against them or their company with the Department of Justice or another organization such as the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, or the Better Business Bureau.
