According to an annual report released today by Better Business Bureau, consumers filed 891,540 complaints against North American businesses in 2008, reflecting a seven percent increase over the previous year.

Canadian bankruptcy levels increased, reveals Equifax data

Equifax Canada today released the latest data from an economic report developed by its Consulting Solutions team, which revealed that Canadians in every region of the country are filing for bankruptcy in increasing numbers. The most recent bankruptcy data as of November 30th 2008, shows that consumer bankruptcies increased by 9% over the same period as a year earlier—with 109,068 bankruptcy filings at the end of November 2008 vs. 100,253 bankruptcies at the end of November 2007.

BBB Changes Its Business Ratings to A+ Through F Letter-Grade Scale

Today, Better Business Bureau (BBB) announced it will be using an improved version of its BBB Reliability Reports™, which will include a more detailed A+ through F letter-grade replacing the current ratings scale of “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory”. This exciting change will take place in January 2009.

Competition Bureau investigation leads to criminal charges related to deceptive telemarketing operations

Criminal charges were laid against four individuals allegedly involved in deceptive telemarketing activities in Quebec, the Competition Bureau announced today. These activities are estimated to have generated approximately $9.3 million in revenue during the alleged scam which targeted small and medium businesses by charging them for CD directories that they did not order.

Three men charged in contracting frauds targeting seniors

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Eastern and Northern Ontario and the Outaouais warns consumers on fraud against seniors. Local contractors have been charged with fraud following an investigation by the Ottawa Police and Ontario Consumer Protection Branch. “Investigators reviewed multiple complaints received by the Ottawa Police Service, the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, and the Better Business Bureau."
